If you’re a Cricut crafter and a Star Wars fan, this project is going to be your new favorite! We took an ordinary trash can and gave it an out-of-this-galaxy makeover—turning it into a custom R2-D2 bin using simple vinyl, a little creativity, and a Cricut cutting machine.
Perfect for Star Wars Day (May the 4th), themed parties, a kid’s room, or your craft space, this beginner-friendly Cricut DIY is fun, fast, and guaranteed to make people smile.
Adhesive vinyl in white, blue, black, and gray
A plain trash can (white or silver works best)
1. Choose or Create Your R2-D2 Design
You can find free or paid R2-D2 SVG files online, use the one we provided, or create your own using Design Space. Separate the design by color so you can cut each layer in the right vinyl.
2. Cut Your Vinyl Pieces
Load your mat, select the correct material settings, and let your Cricut do the work! We recommend starting with the blue and gray sections, followed by black detailing.
3. Weed and Layer the Vinyl
Use a weeding tool to remove excess vinyl. Then, apply transfer tape and layer each part of the design, starting from the base and working upward.
4. Apply the Design to the Trash Can
Carefully place your layered vinyl onto the trash can, smoothing from the center out to avoid bubbles. Burnish well and slowly peel off the transfer tape.
5. Admire Your New Droid Trash Can!
Congrats—you’ve just turned your garbage can into a galactic cleaning assistant!
