In this tutorial, we'll guide you through the process of crafting fabric coasters or mug rugs using Cricut Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets. These versatile materials allow you to create durable, vibrant designs that are seamlessly integrated into the fabric, offering a professional and long-lasting finish. Whether you're decorating for yourself or making personalized gifts, follow along as we detail each step - from material selection and design preparation to the heat transfer process with your Cricut heat press machine.

Materials:

I'm using the tiger print and solid blue sheets from Cricut Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet Patterns in Animal Brights. But there are lots of color options and you're sure to find one that works for your project!

Directions:

Visit your local fabric store and choose a polyester blend fabric for your mug rug top. Opt for a white or very light-colored fabric with the highest polyester content you can find (at least 70%) with no stretch. I found suitable fabric in the lining fabrics section. Cut the fabric into 7-inch squares.

Create your cut design in Cricut Design Space. I used the Monogram feature to create a monogram with my gift recipient's initials. Then I copied the initials and used the Slice function to remove them from a 5 inch square.

Make the project using your choice of Cricut Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets. Follow the prompts in Cricut Design Space to mirror the design before cutting.

Cut the square from one color transfer sheet using the Transfer Sheet setting, so that the carrier sheet is not cut through. Cut the initials from a complementary color transfer sheet, this time cutting all the way through the sheet using a Deluxe Paper or similar setting.

Weed the project. Fit the initials into the empty spaces of the cut square as shown below so you can press both colors at the same time.

Follow the instructions provided by Cricut for using infusible ink to transfer the design onto your fabric squares. Begin by using a lint roller to remove any debris from the fabric surface, as directed. Heat the EasyPress to 365 degrees F. Preheat your fabric for 15 seconds. Place your sheets ink-side-down on the fabric and layer your butcher paper on top. Press for 120 seconds with firm pressure.

Allow the sheet to cool a bit before discarding the remannts of the transfer sheet in the trash.

Layer the inked fabric square on a piece of felt, batting, or quilted material.

Stitch through both layers with some embroidery floss to embellish the mug rug. Then trim the stitched layers of the coaster along the edges of the print to about a 5 inch square.

Cut a piece of backing fabric about 6 inches square (about one inch larger than the coaster) and position it wrong-side up on your work surface. Center the trimmed coaster front on top of the backing.

Fold each corner of the backing over the front of the mug rug and pin in place.
