Tips for Printable Iron-on

There are two types of Cricut Printable Iron-on: one designed for light fabrics and another for dark fabrics. The dark fabric iron-on is thicker and suitable for all colors. If you use the printable iron-on meant for light fabrics on a bright or dark garment, the fabric may show through the printed vinyl. Reserve the printable iron-on for light fabrics for white fabrics.

Both types of printable iron-on are designed for use with home inkjet printers. Be sure to use the highest quality photo settings available and load/print one sheet of iron-on at a time.

Printable iron-on doesn’t come with the typical carrier sheet found in most iron-on vinyl products. Instead, you'll handle the printed material like a large sticker, using your hands to position it. Avoid using transfer tape, as it can pull ink off your printed design.

As a result, Cricut recommends creating simple shapes with printable iron-on because designs with small or delicate details can be challenging to handle. Add an offset to your image in Cricut Design Space if needed to simplify the shape of the final cut design.

After applying the iron-on, be sure to wait 48 hours before washing. When you do wash it, turn the garment inside out and use cold water, then hang it to dry. Avoid using bleach, and if you need to iron the garment, make sure to only iron on the backside, never directly on the decoration.

Directions:

Create your cut design in Cricut Design Space. Upload simple, colorful images of the planets or choose from planet images included with Cricut Access. Below are a few suggestions to get you started. Just remember that if you choose cut designs like these, you have the option to edit the colors, but you must change the operation to Print Then Cut for this project.

  • #M4D6F8451
  • #M268B82A4
  • #M4212D06E

Make the project by following the Print Then Cut prompts in Cricut Design Space. Use your home printer to print the images on Cricut Printable Iron-on, and remember not to mirror your design. I prefer using my bypass tray to load one sheet at a time and set my inkjet printer to photo paper quality. Keep in mind that the printable side of the iron-on sheet is blank.

Keep following the prompts in Cricut Design Space to cut the images. Position the iron-on with the printed side facing up on your cutting mat, aligning it as it appears in Design Space, before loading it into your cutting machine.

Peel the cut images from the carrier sheet using your hands to apply them to your skirt fabric. Work slowly to avoid stretching the printed vinyl material.

Follow the instructions in Cricut's Heat Guide to adhere the printed iron-on to your skirt. The guide offers step-by-step directions tailored to your garment's fabric content and the type of heat press machine you’re using. Be sure to use the provided pressing sheet on top of each piece of printed iron-on during application. Repeat this process for each planet until all are transferred onto the skirt.
