Pet Artwork Using Cricut Vinyl

In celebration of National Pet Day on April 11, 2025, why not create a special keepsake that honors your furry friend? This fun and interactive craft project combines your love for pets with creativity, allowing your pet to be a part of the artistic process! With the help of your Cricut machine, you’ll make a unique canvas design featuring a line drawing of your pet, all while involving them in a playful way.

Materials:

• Cricut Vinyl
• Cricut Tool Kit
• Cricut Transfer Tape
• 8x10 inch painting canvas or canvas board
• Acrylic craft paint
• Spreadable pet-safe treat (I'm using peanut butter that my dog can eat.)

Directions:

Find or upload a cut design to Cricut Design Space featuring a line drawing of your pet. I'm using this cute German Shorthaired Pointer (#M28B86866) design that's included with my Cricut Access subscription.

Follow the prompts in Design Space to make the project, cutting the design from Cricut Vinyl using any Cricut Cutting Machine.

Carefully weed the project and then transfer the design to your canvas or canvas board using Cricut Transfer Tape. The vinyl will serve as a mask. When paint is applied to the canvas, the mask will keep the areas beneath from getting colored.

Place the canvas in a zippered plastic bag along with a few squirts of craft paint. If you're using multiple paint colors, opt for shades that are close to each other on the color wheel to ensure the mixture stays vibrant rather than becoming muddy or brown.

Seal the canvas in the bag well. Apply a spreadable pet treat (something your pet will lick up) on the top surface of the bag.

Place the bag on the ground with the peanut butter (or treat) side facing up. Let your pet lick the treat off the surface of the bag, while interacting with the paint underneath.

Take the painting out of the bag and allow the paint to dry. Remove the vinyl mask from the canvas using your Cricut Tweezers to reveal the design beneath.

Once the paint dries and you peel off the vinyl, you'll have a one-of-a-kind masterpiece to hang up and show off.
