This week’s project is a set of fraction manipulatives from Cricut Design Space.
It is a pretty straightforward idea: students can move the pieces around, compare them, and actually see how different fractions relate to the same whole.
For this project, the accuracy of the pieces really matters - which is one of the reasons Cricut is such a good fit.

Fraction pieces only work if the proportions are right.
Two fourths need to match one half. Three thirds need to make one whole. If the pieces are just a little off, students can end up looking at a cutting problem instead of a math problem.
Cricut takes care of that part.
The Design Space project cuts the circular pieces to consistent sizes and uses a Cricut marker to add the fraction labels. Once the set is made, students can spend their time comparing and combining the pieces instead of working around uneven shapes.
You can cut each fraction family from a different color of cardstock to make sorting easier, while still keeping the fraction printed on each piece.

Because the pieces are separate, students can move them, stack combinations next to each other, and rebuild the whole in different ways.
Before cutting several classroom sets, make one complete set and put every fraction family together.
Check that the pieces meet cleanly and form a full circle without obvious gaps or overlap.
It is also worth checking the Design Space mat preview before cutting. Make sure the fraction labels are still attached to the correct pieces and set to Draw.
If you use heavier cardstock for durability, test that too. You want the pieces sturdy enough to handle repeated use but flat enough that students can line them up easily.
Small manipulatives have a habit of disappearing.
The nice part about making them with Cricut is that losing one eighth does not have to mean replacing the whole set.
Save the project, and you can go back and cut another piece or another full set whenever you need it.
If you are making several classroom sets, adding a small set number to the pieces can also make sorting them out a lot easier when they inevitably get mixed together.
The circular pieces are a good starting point, but the same idea can grow with students.
You can also make rectangular fraction bars that use the same whole length. Those are especially handy when you want to move beyond basic fractions into number lines, mixed numbers, decimals, percentages, ratios, or measurement.
For example, students can line up:
1/2 = 2/4 = 0.5 = 50%
The fraction circle shows that those amounts cover the same part of a whole. A fraction bar makes it easy to connect that same idea to length and a number line.
You do not need a huge second set, either. A few basic bars for halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths, and twelfths can go a long way.
Rectangular pieces can also make the connection to real measurement pretty natural.
If one whole represents 12 inches, for example, it divides neatly into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and twelfths.
Now the fraction relationship students have been building with cardstock has a direct connection to the marks they see on a ruler.
That is an easy way to keep using the same basic manipulative idea as the math gets more advanced.
This is one of those projects where Cricut is doing something that actually matters to the learning.
The pieces need to be accurate. The labels need to stay with the right fractions. And if you are making several sets, they all need to match.
Once the project is saved, you can make another set, replace a missing piece, change the colors, or add new manipulatives later without starting from scratch.
Cricut handles the precision and repeatability. The finished pieces give students something they can move around and use again and again.
