If you're setting up Cricut for a classroom, makerspace, library, club, or school program, the first question is usually pretty straightforward: How many machines do we need?
The harder part is everything that comes after that. How many mats should you buy? How many spare blades should you keep on hand? Do you need a heat press? How much vinyl or cardstock is enough to get started without overbuying?
There isn't one perfect answer for every school, because the way the equipment will be used matters just as much as the number of students. A teacher who does most of the cutting may be able to serve a full classroom with one machine, while a class where students are expected to load materials and run their own projects may need several.
The same is true for supplies. A paper-heavy classroom will use blades and mats differently than a program that mostly cuts vinyl, and a brand-new program usually does not need to buy a full year's worth of materials on day one.
The estimator below is meant to give you a practical starting point for a new setup, not predict exactly what you'll use over the course of a year.
For machine planning, total enrollment is not very helpful. What matters more is how many students are using Cricut during the same class or program session.
A school might serve hundreds of students over the course of a year, but if only 20 or 25 are working during a typical class, that's the number that matters for machine capacity.
It also helps to think about who will actually run the machines. If the teacher or staff handles most of the cutting, one machine can often go a long way because projects can be batched, prepared before class, or finished afterward.
If students are rotating through a Cricut station, you'll usually want a little more capacity so the cutting step does not become a bottleneck. And if students are expected to load materials and run their own projects, especially in a makerspace, entrepreneurship program, or CTE setting, you'll likely want more machines because operating the machine is part of the activity.
The amount of cutting that has to happen during class matters too. A single Cricut can serve a surprising number of students when the schedule is flexible. If most or all students need to finish their cuts during one short class period, though, extra machines become much more important.
For a typical classroom-sized group, these ranges are a reasonable place to start:

These are starting points rather than hard rules. If cutting can happen before or after class, you may be perfectly fine at the lower end. If a lot of cutting needs to happen during one short session, or students need hands-on machine time, the higher end will usually make the class run more smoothly.
For schools working with a tighter budget, it can also be helpful to think in terms of a recommended setup and a minimum workable setup. One machine might technically work where two would be more comfortable; the tradeoff is simply more waiting, more batching, or more cutting outside the class period.

Your planning estimate
Not every Cricut classroom needs a heat press.
If your projects are mostly paper, adhesive vinyl, stickers, cards, signs, or classroom manipulatives, you may not need one at all. A heat press becomes useful when you plan to make shirts, tote bags, aprons, or other projects with iron-on/HTV or similar heat-applied materials.
For most new school programs, one heat press is a perfectly reasonable place to start. Pressing usually takes much less time than cutting, so there generally isn't a reason to match every Cricut machine with its own heat press.
The number starts to increase when heat-applied projects are a regular part of the program and several students need to finish during the same session. It also matters whether the teacher handles the pressing or students are expected to press their own projects.
As a general starting point:

For a typical classroom making occasional shirts or totes, we would usually start with one press and see how it goes. If heat-applied projects become a major part of the program, adding a second press later is much easier than buying several before you know whether they'll actually be used.
For most school programs, LightGrip mats are a good general-purpose choice because they work well with many of the materials schools are most likely to use, including paper and common vinyl applications.
A simple starting point is about two working LightGrip mats per teacher-operated machine and about three per machine when students are rotating through stations or operating the machines themselves.
Having more than one mat per machine is useful even before anything wears out. One mat can be cutting while another is being unloaded or prepared for the next project, which helps keep the class moving.
Regular cutting mats do not have a dependable "X number of cuts" lifespan. Cricut recommends replacing a mat when it no longer holds material securely or becomes deeply cut, creased, or damaged.
For a new program, a small replacement reserve is usually enough. A vinyl-heavy classroom may need fewer extras, while a paper-heavy classroom or one where many students handle the mats may go through them more quickly.
Blade life varies quite a bit depending on what you're cutting, so there isn't a very useful rule like "replace your blade every three months."
For purchasing purposes, though, schools still need a reasonable starting point.

The main thing to know is that paper and cardstock can be much harder on blades than vinyl. In our own high-volume card production, we may use approximately two Fine-Point Blades while making around 125 cards.
That does not mean every blade will last the same number of cards. Cardstock, design complexity, settings, and cutting conditions all make a difference. It simply means that if your program will cut a lot of paper, it makes sense to keep a larger blade reserve on hand.
If cardmaking is part of the program, it's worth adding Card Mats to the starter setup.
For planning purposes, we use about 100 cards per Cricut Card Mat 2×2. Cricut's published guidance is a little more conservative, at up to 20 cards per panel, or 80 cards across the four-panel mat.
Our 100-card figure is a practical planning estimate based on experience, not a manufacturer's stated lifespan. For a new classroom, one or two Card Mats is usually a reasonable place to start if cards are expected to be part of the program.
If cardmaking becomes a major activity, you'll have a much better idea after the first project of how quickly you're going through both Card Mats and blades.
This is where we would resist the urge to buy too much.
For a brand-new program, it usually makes more sense to buy enough material for the first several projects and then adjust based on what students actually use. You may expect to use a lot of vinyl and find that students prefer cardstock, or you may start with simple paper projects and end up doing more shirts, stickers, signs, or entrepreneurship projects.
For a mixed-use setup, a good starter order might include a useful assortment of cardstock colors, several colors of adhesive vinyl, several colors of iron-on or HTV if heat projects are planned, and a roll of transfer tape. The exact amount should scale with class size, but the goal is to support the first few projects comfortably, not predict the entire year in advance.
If the program is mostly paper-based, it makes sense to put more of the budget into cardstock, LightGrip mats, spare Fine-Point blades, and a few basic paper-handling tools.
If the program will focus more on decals, signs, shirts, totes, or entrepreneurship projects, put more of the starter budget into adhesive vinyl, HTV, transfer tape, and weeding tools. There is usually no need to buy large quantities of every color at first. Start with the colors you are most likely to use and build from there.
If you just want a reasonable amount of material on hand for the first few projects, these are useful starting quantities.

These are starter quantities, not full-year estimates. The point is to have enough on hand for the first several projects without tying up too much budget before you know what the class will actually use.
For vinyl and HTV, spread the total across a small number of useful colors rather than buying the full quantity in every color. For cardstock, a mixed pack plus a few extra sheets of the colors you expect to use most often is usually more practical than trying to stock every shade.
If you already know the first project, use that instead of the table. A class making one small vinyl decal each will use much less material than a class making large shirt graphics, even if the number of students is the same.
For cards, plan on about 10% extra card blanks for mistakes or damaged pieces. For Card Mat 2×2 budgeting, we use a practical estimate of about 100 cards per mat.
After the program is underway, it becomes much easier to estimate materials because you can work from an actual project instead of trying to guess annual usage.
For adhesive vinyl, a rough planning guide is:

Adding about 25% extra material is a reasonable classroom allowance for spacing, scraps, test cuts, and mistakes.
For iron-on or HTV, typical project sizes are a little larger:

For paper projects, about 15% extra is usually enough for mistakes, test cuts, and unusable scraps.
For Print Then Cut projects such as stickers or printable vinyl, it is often easiest to estimate based on how many finished items fit on one printed sheet. As a rough guide, think about 4 large items, 8 medium items, or 12 smaller items per sheet, then add about 20% extra printable material for test sheets, printing issues, and alignment mistakes.
For a new Cricut program, the most useful thing is to start with enough equipment and supplies to make the first several projects comfortably.
That usually means the recommended number of machines, a heat press if heat-applied projects are planned, working LightGrip mats, a modest replacement-mat reserve, spare Fine-Point blades, basic shared tools, and a starter assortment of materials.
After that, let the classroom tell you what you need. Your first few projects will show you which materials students actually use, how quickly mats and blades wear in your environment, whether one heat press is enough, and whether the number of cutting machines feels comfortable.
That information will be more useful than any calculator when it comes time to place the next order.
If your school already uses Cricut, the same estimator can still be helpful, but last year's experience should carry more weight.
Look at your actual class size, how many students use the machines at one time, which projects were most popular, what materials are left in inventory, and how quickly you went through mats and blades. If you already make shirts or other heat-applied projects, think about whether students ever had to wait for the press.
Then use that information to adjust your next order.
There is no perfect number of Cricut machines, heat presses, mats, blades, or rolls of vinyl for every classroom. The goal is simply to avoid buying too little equipment for the way the class actually needs to work, while also avoiding a huge supply order before you know what students will actually use.
Start with the classroom workflow, buy enough equipment and materials to support the first several projects, and adjust from there as the program develops.
