Sunflower Door Hanger Wreath with Cricut Iron-on

Late summer is the perfect time to bring a little sunflower charm into your home. This simple DIY wreath is a fun way to do just that, using bright yellow fabric and rustic burlap to create a cheerful sunflower design. It’s easy to put together and makes a great seasonal decoration for your front door or wall.

Materials:

Directions:

Take your wood ring or embroidery hoop and place it on a piece of scrap cardboard. Use a pencil to trace around the inside edge of the ring so you get a perfect circle. Once you’ve got it outlined, grab some scissors and carefully cut out the circle you just drew.

Open up Cricut Design Space and either create your own 'welcome' design or jump straight into this project if you want to save some time. For mine, I’m using a pre-made cut design that’s already available with Cricut Access - it’s called ‘Welcome’ and the design ID is #M4FDD81EB.

Make the project, cutting the welcome design from white iron-on heat transfer vinyl.

Weed the iron-on using your favorite weeding tools.

Cut a piece of burlap that’s about 3 to 4 inches bigger all the way around than your cardboard circle - the extra fabric will give you room to wrap it later. Once you've got your burlap cut, take your iron-on design and place it right in the center. Then, use your Cricut Heat Press to transfer the design onto the fabric. Just make sure to follow the recommended time and temperature settings from the Cricut Heat Guide or the Cricut Heat App so everything sticks perfectly.

Take your burlap and start wrapping it around the cardboard circle, gently pulling it so it lays nice and smooth across the front. Use a hot glue gun to secure the edges of the burlap to the back of the cardboard. Just glue down the fabric a little at a time, working your way around the circle so everything stays neat and snug.

Grab some yellow cotton fabric - use a few different patterns or shades if you want a fun, textured look - and cut or tear it into strips that are about 1 to 2 inches wide and around 10 inches long. Once you have your strips, fold each one in half lengthwise, then take your scissors and trim the ends into a point, kind of like a little pennant shape.

With each fabric strip still folded in half, attach it to the wooden ring using a lark’s head knot. Just loop the folded end over the ring, pull the tails through the loop, and tighten it up. Keep tying the strips like that, one after the other, until you’ve gone all the way around the ring and there aren’t any gaps between the fabric pieces.

Once you’ve got the whole ring covered and it’s looking nice and full, flip it over so you're looking at the back. Then take your burlap-covered cardboard circle and use some hot glue to attach it face down to the back of the ring.

Now flip your sunflower over so the front side is facing up and everything’s looking nice. Glue a length of rope or cording around the edge of the burlap center. Begin at the top of the wreath and work your way around, adding a little hot glue as you go to keep it secure. This step gives it a nice, finished look and really makes that center pop!

To finish it off, get a cute bow and hot glue it right at the top center of the wreath where the ends of the rope meet. Not only does it cover up the seam nicely, but it also adds a fun little decorative touch to bring the whole look together!
