DIY Grandma Sign: A Perfect Gift for Mother’s Day!
Want to make something meaningful for your Mom this Mother’s Day? I’ve been wanting to make my own wood sign so I found the perfect idea for one while browsing Pinterest. My parents have grandchildren both local and in another state so I thought the quote “side by side or miles apart, grandkids are always close to the heart” would be quite fitting. I’ve made wood signs before in classes, but this was my first time making one on my own with the Cricut Explore Air 2.
I started out by figuring out the layout of the words and which fonts I wanted to use (finding the right font is always the hardest part!) and sizing it correctly to the piece of wood I had (about 26″ x 13″). These were fonts found in my Adobe account (Tekton Pro and Swing King) so if you don’t have access to that you can find lots of free fonts on dafont.com. You can also get free fonts or purchase ones directly in Cricut Design Space.
I used the 12″ x 24″ standard mat along with a roll of removeable vinyl for this project so that I could fit the design all onto one piece of vinyl. Since the vinyl is being used as stencil it don’t use a color you would want to use for other projects!
Next, I weeded the design and cut down the vinyl so it was a smaller, easier size to work with when placing on the wood. I used transfer tape to place it while using the scraper tool to help keep the vinyl smooth. Once the design was on the wood I used the scraper tool again along all of the edges of text to make sure it would be ready for paint. You can find Cricut tools here.
I then used Mod Podge to help seal the design.
After the Mod Podge dried, it was ready to be painted! I used 3-4 coats of acrylic paint of each color.
Once the paint was dry, I peeled off the vinyl and used the weeder tool to get off the smaller pieces.
I then touched up any spots that needs to be with paint. When the piece was dry I attached jute twine on the bottom by stapling it to the back. I used small craft clothes pins to hang the pictures.
I think this will be the perfect Mother’s Day gift!Shop Material Bundles For Your Next Project
