DIY Hedwig Owl Costume with Cricut Felt Feathers

Looking for a quick Halloween costume that still looks impressive? This DIY Hedwig owl costume is a fun project for trick-or-treating, school events, Halloween parties, or even a Harry Potter-themed celebration.

The best part is that your Cricut machine does most of the hard work for you. Instead of cutting dozens and dozens of feathers by hand, you can use your Cricut to cut them from felt or cardstock quickly and neatly. Once the feathers are cut, all you need to do is glue them onto a simple cape base, add an owl hat, and your snowy owl costume is ready to wear.

Materials:

Directions:

Open Cricut Design Space and add a feather design to your canvas. For this project, I used image #M4F8EEA54. Once the feather is on your canvas, resize it to about 5 inches long. This size works well for layering on a child-sized cape, but you can make the feathers larger or smaller depending on the size of the costume.

After sizing the feather, duplicate it several times so your Cricut can cut multiple feathers at once. You will need quite a few feathers to cover the cape, so fill your mat with as many feather shapes as you can. Cut most of the feathers from white felt, then cut a smaller amount from gray felt to add some natural-looking variation.

Place your felt onto a Cricut FabricGrip Mat. This mat is designed specifically for fabric and felt materials. It has a stronger grip than a standard mat, which helps hold the felt in place while the machine cuts. This is important because felt can shift or stretch if it is not secured well. Load the mat into your Cricut Maker and cut the feathers using the Rotary Blade. Once the cutting is complete, carefully remove the felt feathers from the mat. Repeat the process until you have enough feathers to cover your cape.

You can also cut the feathers from cardstock if you prefer. Cardstock feathers can be cut with almost any Cricut cutting machine using a Fine-Point Blade. This is a good option if you want to use materials you already have on hand, but keep in mind that a paper feather costume will not be as durable as a felt version. Felt is a better choice if the costume will be worn for trick-or-treating, school activities, or a party where it may get a lot of movement.

Cut a large semicircle from white felt to create the cape base. The curved edge will become the bottom of the cape. You can also use a premade white cape if you want to save time. A purchased cape works great as a base, especially if you do not want to cut or measure the cape shape yourself. The cape does not need to be perfect because the feathers will cover most of it.

Lay the cape flat on your work surface. Starting at the bottom curved edge of the cape, hot glue the feathers one right next to the other. Follow the curve of the cape as you glue the first row in place. Once the bottom row is finished, move up slightly and add another row of feathers. Stagger the feathers on this row so they overlap the spaces between the feathers below. This gives the costume a fuller, more realistic feathered look.

Continue working your way up the cape, adding row after row of feathers until the cape is covered. As you glue, mix in a few gray feathers among the white feathers. This adds dimension and makes the costume look more like Hedwig’s soft snowy owl feathers.

To finish the look, add an owl cap, hood, or hat. You can use a store-bought owl cap, make your own felt owl hood, or pair the cape with a white winter hat and simple owl eyes.

The Cricut cuts all those feather shapes quickly, and the layered felt gives the cape a full, textured look. With a simple white cape base, felt feathers, and an owl cap, you can create a magical snowy owl costume that is perfect for trick-or-treating, Halloween parties, or any Harry Potter fan who wants to dress up as Hedwig.

Do More: More Cricut Costume Ideas

Once you start making Halloween costumes with your Cricut, it is easy to come up with even more ideas. The same basic techniques used for this Hedwig owl costume can be used to create all kinds of quick, creative costumes with iron-on, felt, cardstock, and Print Then Cut designs.

Glow-in-the-Dark Skeleton Costume

Make a classic skeleton costume with a Cricut twist by cutting bone shapes from glow-in-the-dark iron-on. Apply the bones to a black sweatshirt and black pants for an easy costume that looks extra fun after dark.

This is a great trick-or-treating costume because it is simple, comfortable, and easy to layer over warm clothes. You can use a premade skeleton design or create your own bone shapes in Cricut Design Space, then cut them from glow-in-the-dark heat-transfer vinyl and press them onto the outfit.

Ms. Frizzle Costume

Dress up as everyone’s favorite science teacher with a colorful Ms. Frizzle-inspired costume. Use Cricut Printable Iron-On to add planets, stars, moons, and other space designs to a skirted dress.

Printable Iron-On is perfect for this costume because you can create bright, detailed designs without layering several colors of iron-on. Print the designs, cut them with your Cricut, and apply them all over the dress for that fun, busy, classroom-field-trip look.

Finish the costume with bold shoes, fun earrings, and big curly hair if you want to really bring the character to life.

Harry Potter Costume

For a simple Harry Potter costume, start with a black cape or robe and add a Gryffindor crest using Cricut Print Then Cut.

Upload or choose a Gryffindor-style crest design in Cricut Design Space, print it on printable iron-on or printable vinyl, and let your Cricut cut around the shape. Then attach it to the front of the cape for an easy Hogwarts-inspired robe.

Pair the cape with a white shirt, tie, glasses, and a wand to finish the look.
