Create Cut Design

Begin by accessing Cricut Design Space and uploading or selecting a basic "Love Ya" cut image. For a quick option, use this pre-made "Love You" design (#MA56B22E) included in your Cricut Access subscription.

Of course, the beauty of this project lies in its personalization! You're not limited to a "Love Ya" design. Feel free to explore Cricut Design Space for a design that perfectly suits the child artist and their intended recipient. However, it's essential to remember how the vinyl will function in this project. Unlike a stencil where paint is applied within the cut lines, our vinyl will act as a mask. Paint is applied over the mask, and when removed, it reveals the unpainted canvas beneath.

Cut the Vinyl

Follow the on-screen prompts within Cricut Design Space to cut your chosen image using Cricut Permanent Vinyl.

Weed the Vinyl

Weed the design. This means carefully removing the excess vinyl from around your cut image, leaving behind only the desired shape or letters. A weeding tool can be helpful for this process, but your fingers can also work well. 

Transfer the Vinyl

To transfer your vinyl design onto the canvas, apply a sheet of Cricut Transfer Tape over the entire image. Smooth out any air bubbles and firmly press the tape onto the vinyl, ensuring good adhesion. Once the transfer tape is securely attached, remove the vinyl carrier sheet, leaving the vinyl on the transfer tape. 

Position the design in the center of the canvas and use a scraper tool to burnish the tape over the canvas with firm pressure. This process helps to bond the vinyl to the canvas and will prevent the vinyl from lifting during the next step.

Paint

Now comes the fun part! Encourage your child to paint the entire front and sides of the canvas in their favorite colors. Remind them to paint over the vinyl lettering, ensuring there are no gaps or white spaces. Let their imagination run wild! Once they've finished their masterpiece, allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Remove Mask 

Once the paint is completely dry, it's time to reveal your hidden message! Gently peel back a corner of the vinyl and slowly remove it from the canvas - leaving behind a vibrant, white "Love You" where the vinyl protected the canvas from paint.
