Fabric Cross Sign Using Cricut Iron-on

If you’re looking for a fun and creative way to dress up your home décor - or maybe make a thoughtful handmade gift - this project is a perfect fit. We’re taking a simple rectangular wood sign blank and turning it into something special with just a little paint, fabric, and a custom Cricut iron-on decal. It’s easy to personalize with your own colors, words, and embellishments!

Materials:

Directions:

You can start by painting or staining the rectangular wood sign blank in any color or finish you like. This step lets you customize the background to match your style - whether you want a bold painted look, a soft wash of color, or the natural beauty of stained wood showing through.

Cut two strips of fabric, each about one-third the width of the shortest side of your sign blank. Make sure the strips are long enough so that they can easily wrap all the way around the sign blank, with a little extra length to work with. This will give you plenty of fabric to secure in place.

Turn your sign so it’s in a portrait (tall and narrow) position. Take one of the fabric strips and wrap it vertically around the center of the sign, almost like you’re putting a ribbon on a gift. Once it’s in place, secure the ends of the fabric to the back of the sign with glue.

Next, take the second fabric strip and wrap it horizontally across the sign, placing it just above the middle so that it crosses over the first strip and forms a cross shape. Once you’re happy with the placement, flip the sign over and glue the ends of the fabric to the back, making sure everything is secure and smooth in the front.

On the front of your sign, pinch the fabric together right where the two strips overlap. Use a small piece of string to tie it tightly so it stays gathered in place. To finish it off, add a decorative touch by hot gluing a fabric flower right in the center of that gathered spot.

Open Cricut Design Space to create the iron-on decal for your sign. You can use this ready-made project if you'd like. Adjust the design so it’s sized just right to fit in the lower right-hand corner of your sign blank, making sure it looks balanced with the fabric and flower.

Go ahead and make your project by cutting the phrase from the Cricut Iron-on material of your choice - pick a color or finish that complements your sign.

Once it’s cut, carefully weed the design, removing all the extra vinyl around the letters so only your phrase is left on the backing sheet. This will get your decal ready to transfer onto the sign.

Now it’s time to transfer your iron-on design to the sign blank using your Cricut Heat Press. For a project this size, the EasyPress Mini works especially well since its small surface makes it easy to press into tighter areas. Be sure to check Cricut’s Heat Guide for the right time and temperature settings for the material you’re using.

Once you’ve finished pressing and the design has cooled, carefully peel away the carrier sheet to reveal your finished decal.
