Materials:
- Cricut Felt Sampler (or substitute heavy-weight cardstock)
- Cotton roping or twine
- White glue or iron-on fabric adhesive
- Pastic straws cut in 2 inch lengths, beads, poms, etc (optional for crafting leis)
- Thread or floss
- Large beads, 2
I am using Cricut's Carousel Felt Sampler. One sampler includes 10 sheets of 12x12 inch felt in red, orange, yellow, green, light blue, dark blue, purple, pink, white and black - enough to make (5) 9x11 inch banner pennants plus about 25 colorful flowers. The colors in the Carousel Felt Sampler are vibrant colors, perfect for summertime luau-themed party decorations! I choose felt over cardstock for this project for its soft and tactile texture. I love the depth and dimension felt adds to crafts, creating a more visually interesting result. Felt is also generally more durable than cardstock, especially in projects like these that are subject to handling or wear.
Directions:
Step 1: Cut Design
Create your cut design in Cricut Design Space or go directly to this project. I'm using the following designs included with Cricut Access:
- Pineapple #M50584DA5
- Flamingo #M505A5DAD
- Hibiscus #M5059FEC5
- Leaf #M505B8DE5
- Palm Trees #M3C0501DA
- Tiki #M505B4C7C
- Corner #M443AF
- Flower #M490C11B0
- Scallop #M2AAB3F2D
Before you cut, determine if you want to assemble your pennants using white glue or your favorite iron-on fabric adhesive. If you opt for iron-adhesive, apply it to the back of the pennant front prior to cutting following the manufacturer's instructions.
Make the project. I prefer to use a Cricut Rotary Blade with a Cricut Maker series machine and a Cricut StrongGrip Cutting Mat. You can cut Cricut felt using a Fine Point Blade with Explore series machines, but my personal experience is that the Rotary Blade does a superior job on intricate felt cuts like those in this cut project.
Please note that Cricut designed their FabricGrip Cutting Mat to be stronger and denser than their other cutting mats in order to withstand the cutting pressure associated with using the Rotary Blade. I have chosen to use the StrongGrip Mat knowing that using the Rotary Blade on a StrongGrip Mat will be damaging to the mat. I am comfortable with this compromise, but I encourage you to make you own judgment about whether to use materials in a non-standard manner.
Or substitute colorful heavy-weight cardstock for the felt in this project and make it using a Fine Point Blade with any Cricut cutting machine.
Cut 5 pennant fronts (one each of palms, flamingo, hibiscus, tiki and pineapple) and 5 pennant backs (with top holes for stringing and scalloped bottom edge) using your choice of colors from the felt samplers pack. Use the excess felt material to cut an assortment of felt flowers.
New to the Rotary Blade? The Rotary Blade is unique because it can cut fabric without having to stabilize it first. While the Rotary Blade is designed to cut a huge variety of fabric, it is also helpful when cutting such materials as burlap, tissue paper, felt, or foam sheets. See how to get started in our post, How to Calibrate the Rotary Blade.
Step 2: Assemble Banner
If you opted for iron-on fabric adhesive, adhere the pennant front to the pennant back following the manufacturer's instructions using your household iron or EasyPress machine. Otherwise glue the pennants together using white craft glue. Allow to dry.
Thread the pennants on roping or twine of your choice through the holes cut at the top of each pennant. Be sure to leave enough roping at both ends of the banner for hanging.
Step 3: Assemble Leis
Thread an assortment of felt flowers on 1 yard of roping or twine to make a decorative lei necklace. If you'd like, alternate felt flowers with your choice of beads or cut plastic straws along the length of the necklace. Secure the ends of the roping or twine using an overhand knot.
Step 4: Assemble Flip Flops
Thread some floss up through the center holes of 3 stacked flowers, through a large bead, and back down the center hole.
Use the 2 ends of the floss to tie the flower to your flip flop or sandal.
Incorporating Cricut felt into your luau-themed party supplies has never been easier! With a splash of creativity and the precision of your Cricut machine, you can craft decorations that embody the vibrant spirit of Hawaii. As your guests enter your transformed space, they'll be transported to a tropical paradise, filled with the joy and warmth of a luau experience. So, gather your loved ones, hang your banners high, and let the festivities begin. Mahalo and happy making!
