Watercolor Birthday Card Using Cricut Watercolor Pens

If you’re looking for a card that’s equal parts cute and hilarious, you’re in the right place! Today we’re making a birthday card featuring a cake loaded with so many candles it’s basically a fire hazard — yes, really. 🎂🔥

Materials:

• Cricut Watercolor Markers
• Cricut Cutting Machine

You can totally make your own design in Cricut Design Space if you want, or if you’d rather, you can go straight to this project and follow along with me. For my card, I used a couple of elements from my Cricut Access subscription

I love using these Access elements because they save time and make it super easy to put together a card that looks polished and personal, without hunting for extra graphics or fonts.

Now that your design is ready in Design Space, it’s time to load everything onto your Cricut Card Mat. If this is your first time using it - or you just haven’t used it in a while - here are a few quick things that’ll make your cutting experience so much smoother.

1. Always load the mat into your Cricut machine top-edge first (there’s a hole and the “Cricut” logo should be upright). Give your machine enough room behind so the mat can slide out smoothly - avoid jams.
2. When placing cards on the mat, push them all the way to the right and top edges so they align with the printed guides. Use a brayer (or roller) to press your cards down firmly so no bubbles or lifts under the card - better cut results.
3. On full size machines, move the little white star wheels (the roller wheels) of your Cricut to the center of the mat -  this helps avoid marks.
4. When the card is done, use a scraper or spatula to lift the edges of your card first, then gently peel the rest - helps protect your card from bending or damage.
5. After finishing, clear off any leftover bits on your mat so they don’t get caught and cause issues for subsequent cuts.

Follow the step-by-step prompts in Cricut Design Space as you go. The software will tell you exactly when to switch out your markers, so swap in each color when it asks - it walks you through the whole process.

Now for the fun part! Use the water brush that comes with your Cricut markers and gently paint over your drawn lines. The ink will start to spread a bit, giving your card that hand-painted watercolor vibe - super easy and really pretty.

1. Fill your water brush with water and give it a light squeeze so the bristles are just damp.
2. Use the water brush to trace along the inside edges of your drawn design. Short, gentle strokes work best - they pull the color into bigger areas naturally.
3. When you’re ready for a new color, squeeze the water brush lightly while dabbing it on a clean towel. This will rinse the bristles and get them ready for the next shade.
4. Let your card dry completely before handling it.

Lightly singe a corner of the card using a lighter. Just a quick touch to burn and darken the edge is all you need.
